What is a Startup?
A startup is an innovative, early-stage venture focused on developing and delivering new products, services, or solutions. For university startups, this often means transforming research, ideas, or inventions into viable businesses that address real-world challenges.
University startups are typically:
Knowledge-driven:
Rooted in academic research or novel technologies.
Impact-oriented:
Aimed at solving societal, industrial, or environmental problems.
Growth-focused:
Designed to scale through innovation and market adaptability.
Collaborative:
Benefiting from university resources, including mentorship, funding, labs, and networks.

How to Apply?

Follow the steps below to apply:

Step 1: Fill Out the Invention Disclosure Form (IDF)

The IDF is used to gather essential details about your invention. This information is stored in our database to provide you with the necessary support for intellectual property protection. To ensure confidentiality, a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) will be signed as part of the process.

  • Form 1a: Invention Disclosure for Staff-Supervised Projects [Download]
  • Form 1b: Invention Disclosure for Student-Owned Projects [Download]

Once completed, email the filled IDF to enterprise@uom.lk or hand it over to the UBLC office (First Floor, Old TLM Building).
Note: Please ensure to include your contact number in the IDF. We will contact you for the next steps.

Step 2: Technology Evaluation

After submission, we will arrange a technology evaluation with external experts.

Minimum Requirements to Confirm the Evaluation Date:

  • Submission of a Business Model Canvas with a milestone plan outlining how the product or service will be brought to market.
Step 3: Book Your Incubator Space

Secure a space in our incubator to support your startup’s growth.
Important Notes:

  • Selection is based on a defined evaluation marking scheme.
  • Allocations are made on a first-come, first-served basis.

General Advice:

  • If you are confident about taking your product or service to market, we strongly recommend registering your company before applying for the startup incubator.
  • Keep in mind that the company winding process in Sri Lanka is complex. If you are undecided, you may utilize the incubator space for up to one year while finalizing your company registration.
  • In case of two applicants competing for the same space, preference will be given to the applicant with a registered company.
